Fans react to Dan Snyder agreeing to sell the Washington Commanders
Now to another big story to search for new control over the Washington commanders has taken a big step forward. Current owner Dan Snyder has agreed to sell the team to billionaire Josh Harris and his investment group. Adam Longo is here with some new insight on what comes next and how fans are feeling about this ads. Well Leslie, let's start right there first with the fans. News of this sale moving forward has been greeted with, well frankly, a lot of enthusiasm. Now Dan and Tonya Snyder purchased the then Washington Redskins in 1999 for $800 million. Since then, this once mighty organization that thrived under the ownership of Jack Kent Cook has withered.
It's been 17 years since the team has had a playoff victory. The fan base has shrunk and there's been very little appetite for D.C. Maryland and Virginia leaders to get excited about a potential new stadium deal. So this moment, this sale, it changes the calculus of all of those things. Now I want to talk about the new ownership group and what comes next in terms of essentially sealing this deal. But first though, let's hear from some of the fans of the team that I talked to outside of Nats Park just a few hours ago.
Do you guys have any reaction to Dan Snyder selling the Washington commanders? He's a terrible person. Good. He didn't care about the fans. He was just a market ingenious. Didn't have the right people in place. I'm torn about Dan Snyder because I feel like he tried. He tried his best.
Unfortunately, his best wasn't good enough and it's best for the club, best for the city, best for the area. Need to move on and start maybe change the culture. Dan Snyder, as of today, he's selling the team. What do you think? Great. Great. I'm loving it. All right, now let's talk about the guys stepping forward to buy the team.
An investment group led by Philadelphia Sixers owner Josh Harris. Mitchell Rails, both local guys, basketball hall of famer Magic Johnson and others. If they meet terms and hand over $6.05 billion to Dan Snyder, the team is theirs. If, if the deal gets approved by 24 of the 31 NFL owners. Now the owners meet just 10 days from today on May 22nd in Minneapolis. Now our sports director Darren Haines thinks that based on past precedent, the owners will likely punt as more details get ironed out and they'll set a vote for a future date, possibly sometime in August.
Wes? With all of the moves there, the punt and everything. Yes, Adam. Thank you.
