After allegedly agreeing to terms with the NCAA on a potential suspension for head football coach Jim Harbaugh, the University of Michigan decided not to wait on the governing body's decision. Instead they issued self-imposing sanctions and now Harbaugh will miss the beginning of the upcoming season.


As part of these self-imposed sanctions, U of M announced a three game suspension for Harbaugh, which will be served during the opening three regular season games of the upcoming year. All of them are home games against East Carolina, UNLV, and Bowling Green. The sanctions are in addition to previously imposed recruiting restrictions. An interim head coach has not yet been named. Athletic director Ward Manuel issued a statement this evening saying quote while the ongoing NCAA matter continues through the NCAA process today's announcement is our way of addressing mistakes that our department has agreed to an attempt to further that process.
