A 42-story skyscraper under construction in Hong Kong caught fire. Sparks threatened nearby buildings starting smaller fires. Debris fell in the busy Tsim Sha Tsui shopping district. The building burned for nine hours. Over 100 people were evacuated from nearby buildings and two people were injured. The construction project is surrounded by luxury buildings and five-star hotels. It was set to open as a Kimpton Hotel in 2024.
Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than any other city. Its tallest building measures 1,588 feet. The fire could cost as much as $64 million, which would be among the highest insurance payouts in Hong Kong history.
