CBS2 profiles new director of New York Philharmonic



The New York Philharmonic introduces its new music director Gustavo Dutamel. CBS Tuesday with the new maestro. The moment Gustavo Dutamel picks up his baton we know to expect exuberance and joy. The conductor known as a rock star and visionary in the classical music world has made a celebrated move from Los Angeles to New York City. I think when I come now in May it will feel like family. The 42 year old says he was introduced to music in his native Venezuela and credits a program for kids there called El Sistema, using music to enhance young lives. It shaped the way he sees music.

As a real tool of social transformation, giving the opportunity to the young people and the children to have access to music, especially from disadvantaged communities. The experts say the economics for orchestras worldwide keep deteriorating, but in this case what is expected to make a difference is this charismatic maestro who knows how to connect old and young and classical and pop. He performed for Pope Benedict XVI. He also performed at the Super Bowl and more recently conducted the soundtrack for the latest film adaptation of West Side Story. He appeared with pop star Billy Eilish at the Hollywood Bowl. He is also referenced several times in the movie Tar starring Kate Blanchett. One of the most exciting conductors out there, the energy and life that he brings to the orchestra is something really special.

He treats it as a passion, so I think we're really lucky to have him come into New York. Music that we are playing is happening right now, so it's not anymore music from that time.
