TEA to take over Houston ISD in June
Now to a major announcement that's impacting Houston families. The Texas Education Commission will take over Houston Independent School District in June. That's right, the decision was finalized behind closed doors at the state capitol. Our Zach Lashway begins our team coverage this morning. Zach, a lot of changes. Andy, that's correct. And while we are still not sure what these changes will look like for the district, we do know come June 1st there will be a new superintendent and appointed board of managers that will replace the current elected board members.
It is official. The state will take control of Texas's largest school district. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Marath says the goal is to get rid of chronic low achievement and make sure any one campus does not go multiple years with a D or F rating. The system of Houston ISD seems to allow campuses to go many, many years without seeing performance. Leadership is the most important ingredient in achieving success in any endeavor, educating kids chief among them. Failing schools destroys this democracy and today we start doing something. We've never seen a takeover of this magnitude.
On click to houston.com we have more reaction from across the state and within our community from elected officials to parents of children within ISD coming up at 630 response from HISD superintendent and board members regarding this takeover. We will also tell you of a lawsuit being filed today in response to this decision. Those details ahead at 630 Andy.
