Dash camera captures wild Los Angeles crash l GMA

Now to a wild car crash caught on camera, a loose tire sending a small car flying into the air. Our transportation correspondent, Gio Bonitas joins us with that. And Gio, this is a warning for all of us about wheel and tire safety. Good morning. It really is, Robin. Good morning to you. Yeah, it's just unbelievable that this driver was able to survive this crash.

And in just a moment here, we're going to show you exactly what to look for to make sure this doesn't happen to you. But first, take a look at this incredible video. It's the miraculous survival caught on camera. Watch closely. The wheel from the white pickup truck completely separates going under the SUV and sending it flying into the air, crashing down, upside down, leaving an extraordinary field of debris in its wake. That tire even comes back, hitting the SUV again. About two thirds of debris related crashes are the result of something falling off or detaching from a vehicle.

And the wheel and tire is very common. Incredibly, police say the driver of that SUV suffered only minor injuries. The incident happening Thursday on state Route 118 in LA. Officials say sheared off lug nuts apparently led to the tires detachment. Now experts say tire maintenance is critical in avoiding a situation like this. A tire rotation every 5000 to 7000 miles, along with tire balancing and wheel alignment can help catch any issues early. If someone's driving 15,000 miles a year, that could be two or three different opportunities each year to have a professional look at that and hopefully identify any problems before they cause an event like what we see in the video.

And you also want to do your own visual inspection every once in a while, especially as this weather changes. Of course, you want to look at those lug nuts and this part's obvious, but it's important to remember you need to look at the air pressure, make sure it's not too little, not too much, but also look at the edges of the tire. You want to look for any erratic wear and tear, anything that seems unusual because that can signal some problems guys. All great tips from you, G.O. as always. Thank you.
