Seattle City Council considers barring Caste discrimination | FOX 13 Seattle

The Seattle City Council could pass a historic law today that would ban caste discrimination. Shama Sawant proposed the ordinance that would add caste to Seattle's anti-discrimination laws. If the city council approves this ordinance, Seattle will become the first city in the nation to specifically outlaw caste discrimination. In India, the origins of the caste system can be traced back 3,000 years as a social hierarchy based on one's birth. In the U.S., the national debate around caste has been centered in the South Asian community.
