California snowstorm strands residents, vacationers in San Bernardino mountains | LiveNOW from FOX
residents and vacationers who are in the San Bernardino County area in the mountains of San Bernardino. Many thousands of them are stranded as they are grappling with the effects of this storm. For more on this, want to go out live to Fox 11's Phil Schuman. Phil, thanks for being with us here. What's the latest on this? Well, this is a very dangerous situation in the mountains about an hour east of Los Angeles. Elevation about 6800 feet. The communities of Big Bear Lake Arrowhead, all roads in and out have been shut down.
There's been several days of snow and the county has declared an emergency asking for help from the state and the feds doing something as simple as plowing. Snow has blanketed Lake Arrowhead with more coming down yet by midafternoon still not a plow in sight on the residential streets, trapping people in their homes and vacation rentals. You would never think that California would see snow like this. This heavy Jared Carter, his wife, their three kids and another couple have been here since Tuesday. The plan was to leave Thursday. They're still stuck. We're down to can Sue.
We have one bag of top ramen left. We have a couple, maybe servings of orange juice. I called 911 this morning thinking what is the emergency protocol for this type of stuff and their response was sorry. We can only help you if it's a true medical emergency. Who's in charge? Who's responsible? When will the plows come? Good questions with no answers for residents, visitors and the news media. So it is Cal Trans, it's county roads. It's different agencies.
You have San Bernardino County share ourselves, a highway patrol and then even San Bernardino PD is involved as well. So that's just a lot of moving parts and it's not just getting down the hill. It's getting back up to your home. Hard road closures prevent people from doing just that. Even if you have a massive four wheel drive truck like fondunking, I've got a 14 year old, a seven year old stuck out there. No power. They've ran out of food.
Be cheering with the neighbors and the pipes are frozen and nobody can. They don't care. They said they're gonna let us up. It just not giving us permission to go up. You know, I figure maybe some of the residents residents would be allowed in, but it's not happening. Just trying to be patient. But patience is running out down the hill and on the mountain for those who are trapped like Sean Kearney from Malibu in an Airbnb since Wednesday with no way out.
I can't get any real answers from anyone as to when they're gonna take care of the streets here. No people are completely stranded with zero help from anybody. They've left hundreds of roads to pile up as much as five to six feet in some areas. So back live here down the mountain in San Bernardino, Lexi, we're at about 2000 feet of elevation where it's raining farther north here in the mountain resort areas. It is snowing again tonight. They've already got five to six feet of snow that they used to snow in the mountains, of course, but not that much, not that fast. And that's the problem.
So people are running out of food. They're running out of gasoline. People who have a four wheel drive type vehicles are able to get out of their driveways and onto the main roads, which happened plowed with one lane, say they're going to the supermarkets, which are open and trying to get food for their neighbors for their friends. But it's going to be a long, cold and dangerous night up in the mountain resorts east of Los Angeles. Lexi man, that's so scary. Thanks so much. Phil Schumann with this report and those images fill they really looked like it was more so Minnesota or the Midwest.
So really incredible to see the amounts of snow that you guys are seeing in certain parts of the Golden State. No question. All right. Thanks so much. Fox 11 Phil Schumann with that report also want to pull up this tweet as we stay on the topic of California and the weather that they are grappling with there. This tweet here from the supervisor Don Rowe in San Bernardino County. This tweet saying that the county has declared the existence of a local emergency for our mountain communities.
And this comes as you just heard Phil talking about people stranded in San Bernardino County. Also just dealing with trying to find basic necessities like food and things that they need to get by over the next few days being surprised with the amounts of snow that they are getting. And you also saw the weather that Phil was dealing with there down the mountain getting poured.
