Summer camp is more than just swimming, cabins, and archery at Camp Eberhardt. This YMCA camp outside of Three Rivers gives campers an opportunity to view the night sky in a way they may never have before.

Views of the Night Sky

The kids come here and we can show them views through large telescopes under dark skies and show them things that they're not used to seeing with their own eyes. Darren Drake has been the resident astronomer at Camp Eberhardt since 2006. He spends his entire summer here teaching kids about the night sky.

Perseids Meteor Shower

This week they're ready to view one of the most popular meteor showers, the Perseids meteor shower, which peaks this year on August 13th. But this one is about one a minute or 60 an hour typically and the radiant is in the constellation of Perseus which is in the northeast and they can focus on that area of the sky or any part of the sky really is equally valid to look at.

Campers come from all over the country to attend summer camp. Drake hopes this program can instill a new love of astronomy and science for younger generations. Astronomy isn't just a little program this camp offers. Tonight at five we explain how students can attend astronomy camp for a whole week here at Camp Eberhardt. Reporting in St. Joseph County, Michigan, I'm Lynette Grant, WSB.
