Sheriff: Man stole military vehicle day he got of out of jail

We've learned that the suspect was released from the Harford County Detention Center on an unsecured bond the same day as the police chase. 38 year old Michael Stevens, the third of Abingdon had been facing charges involving a theft scheme. He allegedly left jail, walked down the road to someone's house and stole a privately owned 5 ton military truck. It happened in Bel Air off Rock Spring Road around 6.30 Friday evening. The homeowner jumped up on the truck trying to prevent the theft and the person drove off. Luckily the homeowner was able to separate himself from the vehicle without being injured.

Sheriff Jeff Gaylor says soon after the truck was spotted. He was running lights. Yes he ran into a few cars before we began a pursuit down at 24 and Singer Road. Making his way down Route 24 before turning onto I-95 where police pursuit began. They tried to get stop sticks out in front of it had no effect. He was driving recklessly but not quick. 50 miles an hour.

Overhead, Baltimore Police Department's helicopter Fox Trot relayed their bird's eye view. A large stolen military truck would be equipped on the back. This guy could be all with a rifle. He was pointing out the window at us. With the last highway westbound approaching Holland Town, on the wrong side of the street. Stevens continued into Baltimore City and came to a stop on Conklin Street. The sheriff says he got out and tried to make a run for it.

When I stood up on the steps back there I seen a big pickup truck over there and it was trying to get down the street but he couldn't get down because it was too big. And I saw him jump out and run down there and the police got him down the street. No weapon was found. He's now charged with motor vehicle theft and multiple counts of first and second degree assault among other charges while being held on no bond. Stevens will go before a judge on Monday. Now if your vehicle was among those hit in this incident, you can call police and file a report. At the Hartford County Sheriff's Office, I'm Tommy Clark, WBAL TV 11 News.
