Dozens of Palestinians dead after Israeli airstrikes continue

After four days of relentless fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, hopes for peace are fading. Israel is saying it killed a sixth leader of the Palestinian-Islamic Jihad group on Friday, the latest death after the barrage of Israeli airstrikes that have killed at least 33 Palestinians, about half of them civilians, according to Gaza's health ministry. The Palestinian militant group firing back with their own missiles, killing one Israeli civilian this week and targeting Jerusalem for the first time since the latest round of fighting began. The new wave of violence coming just days after Israeli airstrikes killed three senior members of Islamic Jihad. There was talk this week that neighboring Egypt might negotiate a ceasefire, but with the conflict escalating and the death toll rising, the embattled residents of the region expecting this pattern of violence to persist. Well, Tom, if regional peace efforts have been failing, the United Nations now looks like they're trying to intervene. We just heard that China, the United Arab Emirates, and France have called an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

This was yesterday and it was inconclusive. Now, according to the Times of Israel, it was the United States who blocked a resolution in the Security Council that had expressed official alarm at the escalating violence between Gaza and Israel. Tom?.
