Voters in Nigeria cast ballots l GMA



Well now the situation in Africa's largest democracy as ballots are counted in an election that seems significant voting delays and some violence ABC's Lama Hassan is in London with more. Good morning to you Lama. Yeah. Good morning to you. This morning Africa's most popular country Nigeria is counting its votes after millions of Nigerians turned up determined to have their say many of whom are young first time voters costing their ballots in what has turned out to be the most competitive and unpredictable election since the end of military rule more than two decades ago. Now Nigeria is a key U. S.

ally especially at a time when South Africa is due to join Russia and China in military drills in the region. It is Africa's largest economy and one of its top crude oil producers. So this election is being watched closely by the U. S. the voting has largely been peaceful but in some pockets of the country there have been reports of violence with our men firing their weapons in the air attacking some polling stations and there has been some voter intimidation along with long lines which is called delays. So in some areas voting is still taking place today. There are three main front runners Bola Ahmed Tanubu and Attiku Abu Bakr both have been in politics for years and therefore established parties.

There's also a third candidate Peter Obey who's popular among the younger generation. Now initial results could come later today. Well hey there GMA fans Robin Roberts here.
