President Biden makes surprise trip Ukraine
President Biden is in Poland tonight after his surprise trip to Ukraine. The president reaffirming U.S. support for the country as the world marks nearly one year since Russia's invasion. Presidents Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky walked together across a courtyard in Kiev as air raid sirens blared. A historic moment for both countries. The president riding 10 hours on a train to get in and out of the Ukrainian capital.
KTLA's Carlos Saseh though is here with the details we are learning about the secret trip. Carlos. Micah Sher, good evening. A secret and historic trip that took months of planning. And it's been viewed as a defined display of Western solidarity against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This has President Biden pledging more aid to the war torn country amid this ongoing conflict. Amid the sound of air raid sirens blasting in Kiev, President Biden appeared alongside Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in a gesture of unity.
The unannounced trip made via train across Ukraine Monday and coming just days before the one year anniversary of Russia's invasion. During the five hour visit, Biden honored soldiers killed in the conflict. It's the first time in modern history a U.S. president has entered a war zone where there is not an active American military presence. Thank you very much for coming, Mr. President, to the huge moment of supporting Ukraine.
I thought it was important that the President of the United States be here the day the attack began. Mr. Biden announced an additional aid package worth $460 million, the commitment of more military equipment, including hundreds of tanks, a thousand artillery systems and millions of artillery rounds. And that doesn't count. The other half a billion dollars we're going to be announcing with you today and tomorrow. That's going to be coming your way. The visit comes as the war is expected to intensify, with both sides gearing up for spring offenses.
Biden touting America's unwavering support. The freedom is priceless. It's worth fighting for as long as it takes. And President Biden is now in Warsaw, Poland, where it's early Tuesday morning. He plans to address the leaders of NATO's 9-nation Eastern flank building more support.
