Nate Oats addresses Brandon Miller’s pregame pat down entrance [Insider breakdown] | CBS Sports
We do have to touch upon a situation at Alabama where more news continues to come out. We're getting more data points with that situation. The Star Freshman and head coach Nate Oates, the way he's sort of handled this situation. There was some tasteless pregame, I don't want to call it celebration, but pregame announcements and some things that we saw. Here's Nate Oates on the situation Saturday at Alabama. I think that's something that's been going on all year. I don't really know.
I'm not. I don't watch our introductions. I'm not involved with them. I'm trying to place during that time. Regardless, it's not appropriate. It's been addressed and I can assure you it definitely will not happen again. The remainder of this year.
So we continue to deal with this situation in Alabama, which has the gravest of outcomes, the gravest of situations that we could deal with. And it's framed all around a basketball team playing some really productive hoop right now, but then you see things like this and it sort of strikes you as once again, tone deaf from not only the players, but the head coach in the program. Tone deaf, inappropriate, tactless, insensitive. This is mimicking a pat down. You obviously people that are sports fans are familiar with this. You see this sometimes, but given these situations, that is Brandon Miller. Okay.
What this is, is a complete lack of awareness by anyone in Alabama's program. Brandon Miller is going to continue to play. He will continue to be a lightning rock because of it, but this speaks to a larger issue with Alabama's culture. Yeah, he's been doing this all season long since January 15th. Since we had this murder and an Alabama player was kicked off of the team. This has continued to happen. There wasn't one person around the program that noticed this and tried to get ahead of it and said, Hey, we might want to stop doing this.
It looks really bad. It only took until this story just blew up this week with Brandon Miller's involvement in this that we became aware that he was even part of this situation, even though he has not been charged as not a suspect. He's clearly a part of the situation. He delivered the gun to the scene and it took until social media backlash happened in the middle of this game, Joe, for finally someone to recognize what was happening. It's a terrible reflection on Alabama and obviously an Alabama program and it's coach Nate Oates that has been on the receiving end rightfully so of a lot of criticism. Now he said it's never going to happen again, but the fact that it even allowed to get to this point and Oates saying, I'm not I'm not paying attention during the pregame introductions. I'm the diagramming plays, but no one else around him.
Let him know. Really, really bad look. Yeah, you are responsible for all all things under the umbrella of your program and things continue to go to the wayside here for Nate Oates will continue to cover that situation as closely as possible.
