Is Erin Blanchfield Ready For Title Shot After Finish Of Jessica Andrade? | UFC Fight Night 219
Erin Blanchfield took full advantage of her first UFC main event opportunity on Saturday with a second round submission of former champ Jessica Andrage in the UFC Fight Night 219 headliner. This was a brilliant performance from Blanchfield, surprised a lot of people including Andrage on the feet showing some good technique, good power in an area where many people coming in thought she was likely to be at a significant disadvantage. Obviously in the second round gets it down to the mat, pounces all over Andrage and gets the submission win and this was nothing short of a big time statement for Blanchfield saying afterwards that she wants the title shot against the winner of the upcoming UFC 285 women's flyweight championship bout between Valentina Shchenko and Alexa Grosso and I think she's definitely earned it and has proven ready for it at this point. Maybe you could give her one more test against Tyla Santos who she was originally supposed to face on this card or a Menon Fiora but I think right now there's a lot of questions around those two. Fiora recovering from an injury and Santos had to pull out of this fight because of some visa issues seemingly going on so I think the timing is right to put Blanchfield in there that fight not that long away coming up on March 4th and I think the time line sets her up perfectly barring any injuries to the winner whether it's Shchenko or Grosso I think that is the fight to make at this point. Is she able to beat Shchenko if she continues her run of dominance through Grosso? I think more recently you could make an argument Shchenko is vulnerable in some of her fights specifically against Santos. Maybe we see more of that in the upcoming fight against Grosso and she still wins or maybe we've seen the decline of Valentina Shchenko coming and she loses that belt.
Either way I think a Grosso versus Blanchfield fight and of course this Shchenko Blanchfield fight would be very intriguing and a fight a lot of people would want to see. There's a lot of hype around Erin now and I think she's got to take advantage of it and try to keep the ball rolling and become the youngest women's champion in UFC history.
