Summary:

The South Korean government has contributed a generous gift of $2 million to aid in disaster relief efforts in Maui. The donation includes essential supplies such as generators, food, baby formula, and sleeping bags. Additionally, they have provided $1.5 million in cash to the Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF), marking the largest donation the organization has ever received.

The donation from South Korea is poised to significantly impact the short, mid, and long term recovery of Lahaina, which has been severely affected by the recent fire. The Hawaii Community Foundation is actively engaged in rapid response mode, addressing crucial healthcare needs, including mental health services for affected families. The foundation is also supporting organizations that provide communication services, which require power, thereby funding essential resources like propane to ensure effective communication channels.

The U.S. Consul General, Lee So-young, personally presented the $2 million check to the state of Hawaii. Out of this donation, $500,000 will be allocated towards supplies, while the remainder will benefit the Hawaii Community Foundation. The Consul General expressed his deep sympathy for the Korean residents of Maui who have lost their homes and belongings in the disaster. He also acknowledged the impressive outpouring of donations from the community and praised the charitable spirit of the American people.
