Migrant surge as US prepares for Title 42 end, explained
Turning now to the crisis at our southern border, Title 42 set to expire on Thursday. Authorities now bracing for up to 10,000 migrants today. With Title 42 expiring, U.S. authorities are unable to turn migrants back because of COVID concerns. A rush towards the southern border as thousands of migrants make a desperate push to enter the U.S.
Border Patrol saying it's apprehended more than 26,000 migrants in just 72 hours. Another 7,500 escaping. It comes just days before Title 42 is set to end, the Trump-era health policy allowing authorities to quickly expel migrants based on COVID concerns, without giving them enough time to apply for asylum. And what we're going to see is going to be sort of an unprecedented surge at the border. Professor Brad Jones with the UC Davis Global Migration Center says it's a crisis years in the making. The images that we're going to see are going to be, to many Americans, look very scary, when in fact what's really happening is we're dealing with this pressure cook or this backlog of asylum seekers. The Biden administration is expanding holding facilities, adding immigration officers and even sending 1,500 active duty troops to support the response.
Officials are bracing for upwards of 10,000 migrants crossing every day, many of them escaping horrific conditions in their home countries in Latin America. These are real mothers. These are real fathers. These are real children. They're just like us. They may look differently. They may speak a different language.
They're coming from different circumstances, in dangerous circumstances, and they're looking to this country for help. Starting Friday, there are a series of new rules that migrants need to follow before they can apply for asylum here. If they don't follow those rules, not only will they be deported to their home country, but they'll be unable to re-enter the United States for five years. A rule that was not in place before Title 42 expired.
