Grace Bumbry, 1st Black singer at Bayreuth, dies at 86



St. Louis native and opera star Grace Bumbry has died. The girl who loved to sing in the church choir and summoner high school went on to become one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation. Along with her musical achievements, Bumbry is also known for her work to break racial boundaries during segregation. She also performed at the Paris Opera and other locations across Europe. Grace Bumbry was 86 years old.
