Brandon Johnson sworn in as Chicago’s 57th mayor
Hi, Dina and Patrick. All of these folks are filing out now after sitting in on this inauguration ceremony a bit earlier. We did have a chance to speak with them about what they are hoping to see as Brandon Johnson takes office. Now, we do know, as you mentioned, he is facing several challenges, including choosing a new police superintendent while fighting violent crime as the summer is soon approaching, as well as the influx of migrants bust and flown here from Texas. Now, during his campaign, Johnson ran on the better Chicago agenda. We heard a lot of those sentiments in his speech today. He is pledging $800 million in new revenue by taxing wealthy residents and companies, as well as a focus on schools, transportation, new housing, health care, mental health and jobs.
Now, during the election, Johnson won all of the city's majority Black wards and five majority Latino wards. He was backed by multiple labor unions, including CTU and SEIU. We saw several of those members here today in support, and he also got young voters to turn out. I feel good about it. I think our future is going to be bright. I'm just glad to be a part of this wonderful ceremony that's going to take place because I want to make sure that our city benefits from this leadership. I was rooting for him very hard throughout the entire election, and I'm really, really excited and grateful to see what's to come.
I think in Brandon Johnson, we have new and dynamic leadership, and we're looking for a better Chicago. And so this is an exciting day for our children. It's exciting for the work, the business community. I believe that Brandon Johnson will bring this city together like never before. And Brandon Johnson has a very busy afternoon. He is now moving over to City Hall, where we will be as well, where there is an open house, meet and greet on the fifth floor, and then he is supposed to make some comments and meet with the public in Daily Plaza. That should happen around 3.
30 this afternoon.
