Mikaela Shiffrin sets World Cup skiing record with 87th win

We have some very exciting news. Some exciting breaking news. Very, very exciting breaking news. It hasn't been done in four decades, but today history was made with Colorado ski racer Michaela Schifrin, winning 87 World Cup races, breaking the all time record held by Ingmar Steinmark. Schifrin was racing in Sweden when she broke the record in Steinmark's home snow. Matt Renew joins us live from. Has won more World Cup races than anyone else when she's only 27.

You're right, Mark and Anousha. Good morning, the best ski racer of all time from Colorado. How exciting is that? And on a powder day, you know, we've all been waiting for Michaela to set this record, just sort of expecting it. But Michaela's family will tell you all they've ever been focused on is making good turns, skiing well and going fast. And her brother Taylor says seeing the results of that hard work and now seeing his sister as the best ski racer, male or female, has been fun to watch. One of the champs, the right footer, about 15 minutes. Growing up around the sport of skiing.

It's just raining who we are. Taylor Schifrin has seen some great skiing. He's also raced World Cup, raced Continental Cup, Norams, Pro Am. But as the brother of Michaela Schifrin, he's also seen historic skiing. We are witnessing greatness. It's fun to see that she has that confidence back. The Schifrins are a Colorado ski family.

And while winning has never been their focus, Michaela has won a lot. Time and time again, Michaela Schifrin delivers. We were trained to not focus on a result. Don't focus on the win. Don't focus on the medal. Focus on the turn. Focus on the process.

And all else will come with that. Taylor was there for Michaela's first World Cup win. You won. You're just 17. It's exciting to watch. It's fun. Watched when Michaela had a historic 17 World Cup wins in one season.

Arguably the greatest season of all time. 17 wins for Crystal Gloves. The skiing she's doing right now is reminiscent from what is called the best season ever when she won Michaela's masterpiece. The 17 wins in a single season. Michaela Schifrin on the march to equal Ingamar Stenmark. And is now watching as his little sister does something no male or female Alpine ski racer has ever done. A once in a multi-generational event hasn't happened in 40 years for our sport.

The magnitude of this moment, the scale and scope of what Michaela Schifrin is poised to. When 87 career World Cup victories, breaking the some 40-year record set by Ingmar Stenmark. An achievement Taylor says deserves to be among the greatest moments in sports history. Be analogous to Michael Jordan's final jump shot, that iconic picture that everybody's seen. It would be Brady's last Super Bowl. It would be Serena Williams' final slam, or Federer's final slam. It's the greatest of the greatest of all time.

It's the best athletes that have dedicated their entire lives to being part of sports history. And is the culmination of a lifetime of hard work and hard sacrifice from a Colorado girl who's in the family business of skiing fast. Greatest ever period that hasn't happened in four decades. How exciting is that? Michaela Schifrin, again, all-time record for World Cup wins. Pretty exciting stuff. So she not only has all of those wins, 87 setting a record. This season she also got the overall World Cup title, the Slalom title, the GS title.

She's had 13 wins this season. It still has three more races to go before the season wraps up. And as if all that wasn't enough, check out some of this video from the race today. Michaela Schifrin surprised at the finish line by her brother, who he just saw Taylor, and her sister-in-law, who flew from Denver to Sweden to see her big bear hug after the win. He was there for the first one. He's there for win 87. How awesome is that? She had no idea it was coming.

Mark and Anusha, just a big day of surprises, records being set. Michaela seeing her brother and sister-in-law in Sweden. That had to be just a wonderful reunion for their family. That's incredible. Absolutely, just incredible. And Matt, you know the Schifrin's well. And you live up in Summit County.

And it's not very often that we see one of the best athletes ever. And being able to witness her ski like that, I mean, she must be the hometown hero in all of Summit County and Edel County everywhere. You know, she is. She's a big deal in Colorado, Mark. And her star is only shining even brighter, even bigger, though, in Europe. Michaela can still kind of move around here in Colorado. She can go to the grocery store, maybe get a cup of coffee.

And she doesn't really drop a whole lot of attention. People will just sort of say hi and then go on their way because we're used to seeing really good skiers in Colorado. In Europe, she's just a superstar over there. Her brother's got a great story about how they went to a toll booth once. The person working in the toll booth recognized her, stopped all the traffic at the toll booth until he could get a monograph and then let them go through. Yeah. She deserves it.

She deserves all the fame and all the success that she has. All right, thanks so much, Matt. We'll see you in just a bit. Well, same path.
