History of trading into top 5 for quarterbacks

Who do the Panthers take number one overall? Hey, Gabe McDonald is here with us right over there. And Gabe, trading into the top five for quarterback, has not historically always been a slam dunk. Yeah, guys, a handful of teams have taken the gamble. However, few have seen it pay off. The Panthers now have all the leverage adding into the draft, and they look to land their gander center in order to set the franchise up for future success. The Carolina Panthers are officially on the clock. If you have a conviction on a guy, you go get him.

It's pretty simple that way. If you don't know, and you're going to give all these resources to go up and get it, you're hurting your team in the long run. The Panthers are now in position to draft their quarterback of the future after trading two first round picks, two second round picks, and star-wide out DJ Moore to the Bears. This is a huge decision. And it would be malpractice not to really vet through every one of those decisions. What's the impact? What are the unintended consequences? You have to think through all that, and that's where we're at right now. Though the Panthers have all the leverage sitting at the top of the draft, trading up for quarterbacks hasn't always panned out for teams across the NFL.

Since 2012, six franchises have traded into the top five to pick a quarterback. Most recently, when the 49ers moved up from 12th to 3rd to select Trey Lance in 2021, Jared Goff, who the Rams traded up from 15th to draft with the first overall pick in 2016, is the only QB of that group to win a playoff game. Touchdown Rams! Selecting the Panthers first franchise QB since Cam Newton is a collaborative effort. It's one that Scott Fitterer is confident the front office will get right as they begin a new era under Frank Reich. Quarterbacks the biggest thing though, that we need to fix long term. And we'll figure out who that is. Is it Sam? Is it one of these other guys? Is it in the draft? We'll figure it out.

You better be right. You better have conviction if you do move up. So that's, but when you do do that, you're all in. So the Panthers are joining this list tonight. Teams to trade up for the first overall pick since 1990. The Rams, of course, the most recent team to do it back in 2016 when they traded up to get Jared Goff. Back in 2001, the Falcons traded for the number one pick and drafted Michael Vick.

I think that worked out pretty well. The fun fact for you, back in 1995, the expansion Panthers owned the number one pick. They traded it to Cincinnati for the Bengals fifth overall pick and their fourth pick in the second round.
