New Yorkers mark 1 year since Russia's invasion of Ukraine

will be events across the tri-state area today to mark one year since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. One event took place in lower Manhattan this morning. Eyewitness news reporter Derek Waller continues our coverage. And you know, people have been fighting for their freedoms here at Bowling Green Park ever since the Revolutionary War. That's why this flag raising today was so symbolic. They say the Ukrainian national anthem has that blue and yellow flag rose above Bowling Green Park, now flying right next to that Revolution-era American flag, first planted here after we defeated the British. I really hope this will be a very great reminder for everyone that a small country with a huge nation with a huge spirit can defeat a larger country.

They also have Congress on their side and 113 billion in aid so far. This is a battle between democracy and dictatorship, between our future and our past. The global democratic community is tied together by shared values and a common destiny. A threat to my friends is a threat to me. It's more than just about the Ukrainian territory. It's about the principle of democracy and self-determination. This protest happened overnight outside the Russian consulate on the Upper East Side.

People holding candles and standing with signs that say things like, I'm Russian and I stand with Ukraine. Protesters say the West can continue standing with Ukraine by sending more weapons. It's not that we want the war. Ukrainian has been the country that suffered the most. But unfortunately the reality is we have a bully with the nukes on our front steps. And there are many events planned this afternoon here in New York. In fact, later today, Governor Kathy Huckle is going to be at a Ukrainian church in the East Village.
