Florida executes man for 1990 murder while also a fugitive

Just hours ago convicted killer Donald Dilbeck was executed in Tallahassee. At the same time this vigil was held for Dilbeck outside of the Pinellas County Courthouse tonight. He had been in prison for more than four decades. 32 years ago he escaped a prison work detail and got into a woman's car near Tallahassee. Faye Vann refused to drive and fought him. Investigators say he stabbed her more than 20 times. Before his escape Dilbeck was already serving a life sentence for killing a Lee County deputy in 1979.

He was 15 years old. The governor signed Dilbeck's death warrant last month before the Supreme Court denied a motion for a stay and the US Supreme Court just last night also denied a motion to block the execution. Dilbeck's execution is the third under Governor Ron DeSantis and the first since 2019.
