An emergency flight carrying shelter animals from Maui has arrived in the Bay Area, offering hope for their adoption and relief for the Maui Humane Society after the wildfires. The flight, organized by non-profit Greater Good Charities with support from Southwest Airlines and Ameriflight, brought over 40 pets to be adopted by families in need.

The animals, including 33 dogs and 11 cats, had traveled over 2000 miles from Maui to find shelter in the Bay Area. These pets, rescued from the wildfires, are expected to have a better chance of adoption outside the danger zone. The Maui Humane Society aims to free up space for more rescued animals by sending these pets to the Bay Area shelters.

In a collaborative effort, six Bay Area shelters have joined forces to handle the influx of animals. The shelters, including Alameda Animal Shelter, Animal Rescue Foundation, East Bay SPCA, Fremont Animal Services, and Marin Humane, are working together to ensure these animals find loving homes. A large adoption event is planned at Berkeley Humane on August 26th, where numerous shelters and rescues will participate.
