What to expect from the 2023 Oscars

All right, thank you. Trending today, the 95th Academy Awards are airing Sunday night right here on ABC. Preparations for the Oscars are in full swing with the big night just two days away. ABC's Rina Roy has a preview from the Champaign carpet in Hollywood. The biggest night in Hollywood is just around the corner and millions will be tuning in to watch the stars and to see which films and actors will walk away with a coveted Oscar statue. Jimmy Kimmel hosting for the third time. The spotlight will be on Jimmy Kimmel.

I just know he's gonna hit it out of the park. But Jimmy Kimmel is not gonna let anybody off the hook. Kimmel already cracking jokes about last year's jaw-dropping moment when Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock after a joke about his wife Jada. I can't get slapped, I cry a lot. This time around, show producers are prepared if something goes awry. They formed a crisis team to deal with any issues that might come up that are in any way similar to the slap. So that's been a significant development that they'll be around ready to handle the untoward moment should it happen.

As for what is planned, some big name performers are set to take the stage, including Lenny Kravitz and Rihanna. No blest dreams. But the big reveal so many are waiting for will come at the end of the night. Okay, Coda. When the Best Picture Award is announced. 10 movies in the running for Oscar Gold, including Elvis, Top Gun Maverick, Avatar, The Way of Water, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is up for a total of 11 awards. Everything Everywhere All at Once took home the producers' guilt, the directors' guilt, the screen actors' guilt.

I say now they are a strong favorite to be Best Picture. 16 out of the 20 acting nominees are first timers, including all of the nominees for Best Actor. And three of the Best Actress nominees are also first timers, Andrea Reisburrow, Michelle Yeoh, and Anna DeArmas. All 23 awards will be presented live this year after the Academy faced backlash for pre-taping some of the winning announcements last year. At the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Rena Roy, ABC News.
