At Least 39 Burned to Death in Detention Center Fire

A fire in a migrant facility in Mexico has left at least 39 people dead. According to Mexico's National Immigration Institute, a fire broke out around 10 p.m. on March 27th in a detention center. The center was holding 68 men from Central and South America. The people in this Ciudad Juarez shelter across the border from El Paso, Texas, had requested asylum status and were staying there during the process. The bodies of the casualties were laid in rows under silver blankets.

Firefighters, medical professionals, and law enforcement were all on the scene. 29 people were transported to hospitals and considered seriously injured. This Venezuelan woman named Vianle Infante says she saw burned bodies lined up only to find out her husband was injured but alive. Consulates for the Central and South American nations the victims were from have been contacted for help identifying remains and informing loved ones. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
