Michiganders rally against the disposal of toxic waste in Michigan

Well, the biggest concern is that this toxic waste, this liquid vinyl chloride that's supposed to be safely stored here at Republic Services in Romulus won't be. That it will leak and it will get into the soil and the water here in the Great Lake State. The extensive and paramount work continues of removing contaminated soil and testing the environment. 23 days after a train derailment released toxic chemicals into East Palestine, Ohio. People living near the site, fearing for their health and safety. One thing that's been made clear to me is that everyone wants this contamination gone from the community. But where is it going? Well, at least 15 truckloads of the toxic waste is here in Wing County.

We don't want this stuff in our backyard. We don't want this sickness. Others assembled in Romulus on Sunday at one of the two EPA approved dumping sites in our state demanding the waste be removed. This is not any way about politics. This is about the safety of humans. This is how we treat the beautiful Great Lake State by bringing Ohio's toxic waste to Michigan and especially to Down River. Representative Jim DeSana echoing US Representative Debbie Dingles concerns that state and local officials were not given a warning the waste would be making its way to our state.

The complaints forcing the EPA to halt the transportation of the toxins from Ohio. But today that process will resume. But not to Michigan. Ohio officials confirming the next shipments of waste will go to two sites in Ohio. But that does not rule out the Great Lake State in the future. We're not interested in the conversation. We don't want this stuff here at all.

Now we're being told that it's not the government's responsibility to determine where this toxic waste will go. That's a responsibility of the train company that started this whole mess. It's the EPA's job to regulate the transportation. But DeSana says there will be a formal complaint launched against the EPA on how they handled this entire process. There is much more to come from this story. So make sure you stay with 7 Action News as we try to bring you the very latest. I'm Kiera.

The disaster we've been watching play out in Ohio for weeks now impacting families here in Michigan. Thank you so much, Kiera.
