Hundreds gather for vigil outside the Russian Embassy

Exactly one year ago, Russia invaded Ukraine and that deadly war is still going on. It's estimated more than 200,000 people on both sides have been killed. The United States is taking additional steps to help Ukraine. The Pentagon announced a $2 billion security package. More ammunition and small high-tech drones are part of that. The White House also announced a coordinated effort with G7 partners. That includes new sanctions targeting the Russian economy.

And tonight some of our neighbors came together to mark one year since the invasion. And our Katie Lusso was there. And tonight hundreds are here outside the Russian embassy in a show of solidarity with the people of Ukraine. We have never been this united. We have never felt the support of the entire world behind us like we feel today. With candles flickering and flags flying high, singing together. Standing together as one.

Friday marked one year since the war in Ukraine began. The Russians are killing Ukrainians. They're killing, they're maiming, they're torturing, they're trying to obliterate our country. For many the mood's somber. How can you leave in peace when that is going on? Marina Deouise is both Russian and Ukrainian. That war just cuts through my life, through the lives of my family. It's the worst year of my life.

And that's the worst thing that could, could have a picture happen to us. She and the others calling for more support for Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for democracy not only for themselves but for the entire world. Russia is fascist country now. And we should stop them. Ukraine is just the first. Absolutely crucial that we stand with Ukraine and that is stopped.

Because if this war is not stopped now, it will expand years later. And there will be another vigil and rally tomorrow afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial. I'll say the Russian Embassy.
