HBCU Combine Recap 2/20/2023 | New Orleans Saints

HBCU Legacy Bowl Week kicked off today, Monday at the Oxford Sports Performance Center. Here at the indoor facility, the players were able to come out and go through a bunch of different drills. It's HBCU combined. 47 different players participated. They ran agility drills. They did the four yard dash. They had the vertical jump.

They were able to perform in front of a bunch of scouts and executives from across all of the NFL teams in a week. XFL scouts as well as USFL scouts were in attendance as well. So it's not just opportunities with the NFL, but other professional opportunities for a lot of these HBCU student athletes. Being a part of the youth football development department here at the same school is an honor to be involved in this type of event. Being a part of that intentional focus to give the HBCU athletes an opportunity that maybe they would not have otherwise. Wide receiver Xavier Smith is one of the student athletes here participating in the combined as well as the legacy bowl this upcoming weekend. He's a wide receiver and someone who came out of Florida A&M ran an incredible four yard dash.

Hit four or four two times. So he was really moving out here today taking advantage of his opportunity. It's been a wonderful experience and I've been doing this for a long time. I got a chance to just show that I could perform at a hot level and that was the plan coming in to this day. Not everybody get a chance to experience this moment and experience this opportunity. So you know I'm just taking it in day by day, soaking it up and I'm definitely going to enjoy this process while I'm here. We'll be back with more legacy bowl content all week as we have practices leading up to the game this Saturday 3 o'clock at Yulman Stadium.
