Former President Jimmy Carter to receive hospice care at home instead of treatment at hospital

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, is now receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center releasing a statement Saturday saying that after a series of hospital stays, the former president has decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. The news met with an outpouring of support for the former president, including from the Secret Service which has guarded him for decades. The Secret Service spokesman writing on Twitter, rest easy, Mr. President. We will forever be by your side. Carter is the oldest living former president, serving one term from 1977 to 1981, but it's his charity work after leaving office that many are now remembering.

Carter and his wife, former First Lady Rosalind Carter, founded the Human Rights Organization, the Carter Center. The couple also prominent supporters of Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for those in need. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for helping bring peace and international conflicts, promoting human rights and social and economic development. And Marynath the Baptist Church, where Carter taught Sunday school, that legacy honored on Sunday. Right now, we're all kind of struck because somebody we love very, very much is not feeling too very well right now. But think of the legacy that he's got. Because all the kind words of support pour in, the family says they are grateful for the concern.

Carter's grandson took to Twitter Saturday writing, quote, I saw both of my grandparents yesterday. They are at peace. And as always, their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words. Faith Aboubey, ABC News, Washington.
