Former President Jimmy Carter receiving hospice care

An announcement tonight from the family of former President Jimmy Carter. He is receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, and the family is asking for privacy. 98-year-old Jimmy Carter is the oldest living former American president. On Twitter, the Carter Center released this statement. After a series of short hospital stays, Carter decided to spend the rest of his time with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. His grandson also tweeted, I saw both of my grandparents yesterday, they are at peace, and as always, their home is full of love. When I was a leader of this great nation, I had a good friend here, Kenneth Hahn.

In 1995, the former 39th president came to Watts to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. That's just one example of Carter's humanitarian efforts after serving one term as president. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his dedication to peaceful solutions to international conflicts and his commitment to human rights. Well, you don't have to make a difference all over the world, you just make a difference in the eyes of one grateful homeowner family who's never had a decent place to live before, and all of a sudden they see what I consider to be a modern miracle. In fact, with Habitat for Humanity, he and wife Roslyn volunteered to help build houses all over the world. Carter defied illness and death for years. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2015, melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

In 2019, he was declared cancer-free. More recently, he's been mostly missing from public life. In 2021, he was the only former president who did not attend Joe Biden's presidential inauguration. Also in the Carter Center tweet, a request for privacy for the family, but also gratitude for the concern from his admirers. Carter is also the author of 20 books, including The New York Times bestseller of full-life reflections at 90.
