India has issued a travel advisory to its citizens in Canada, particularly to the hundreds of thousands of students, urging them to exercise utmost caution. This advisory comes as tensions between the two countries escalate due to a dispute over the murder of a six separatist leader. While Canada asserts that it is safe, India believes that Canadian authorities need to take action against the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in the killing.
India Cautions Nationals in Canada
India issued a warning to its citizens in Canada, including hundreds of thousands of students, to exercise utmost caution following a dispute over the murder of a six separatist leader. The advisory serves as another sign of deteriorating ties between the two countries. Meanwhile, Canada insists that it remains a safe country. This travel warning was prompted by tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats that occurred earlier this year, and a Canadian Citizen on Canadian soil. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has noted that Canada is investigating credible allegations that Indian government agents may have been involved in the June murder of Hardeep Singh Nijir. India, however, strongly rejects these allegations.
Nijir is a Terrorist?
It's worth noting that India categorized Nijir as a terrorist years ago following his involvement in a separatist movement. On Wednesday, India's main opposition party, the Congress Party, endorsed the government's position and sees the situation as a tit-for-tat disagreement between both countries. Shashi Taurour, the party's leader, stated that Canada's public statements have put the country's relationship in jeopardy. He believes it's unfortunate that Canada chose to go public with the matter, especially by making a statement in parliament. Meanwhile, in Punjab's holy city of Amritsar, some six individuals have called for clarity on the issue and asked for calm.
Talks are Necessary for a Solution
Many discussed how talks can be a solution to this complicated situation. One retired businessman suggested that for a solution, all parties should come together and talk things out. Protests also occurred among six individuals in neighbouring Pakistan who demanded India be held accountable for whatever involvement it may have had in the murder. The White House has also expressed its concern about these allegations and is encouraging India to cooperate in any investigation. Although small groups of six in Australia, Britain, Canada, and the US still support the separatist demands, there is no longer much support within India's borders.
Canada Has Yet to Elaborate
Canadian officials have remained tight-lipped about the evidence they have suggesting India's involvement in the murder. As the dispute continues to escalate, India has urged Canada to take action against the separatist movements. There has been no shortage of finger-pointing and anxiety in this situation, leading to travel warnings and the expulsion of diplomats. Ultimately, for a resolution to come, all parties involved must come to the table and communicate openly and honestly about their views and concerns.
