Beyoncé kicks off "Renaissance" world tour

Hail the Queen Queen V herself performing Cuffit from her 2022 album Renaissance. That's right, the global superstars highly anticipated world tour promoting that album and more of her greatest hits kicks off today in Stockholm, Sweden. Beyonce has yet to reveal anything about the show's set list though. Still, Forbes is reporting the 32-time Grammy winner could clear more than $2 billion from her world tour, even out earning Taylor Swift's ongoing Smash Errors tour. Joining us now is Haran Mamoh. She is an R&B and hip hop reporter for Billboard. Haran, good to have you.

So tell us what details do Beyonce fans need to know about this world tour? Well, this is Beyonce's ninth tour as a solo act and her fourth all stadium tour overall. It'll actually be her first stadium tour since the formation world tour in 2016. But honestly, there's not much that she's revealed so far. Like he said, we don't really know anything about the set list. There's no opening acts that we know of so far. Earlier this year, she performed at a Dubai concert for the opening of that Lanta's Royal Hotel and she didn't perform any song from Renaissance then. So this will truly mark the first time that she's performing the new album in front of a live audience.

And what's interesting about that Dubai performance is so many people posted to social media little snippets that you've got a sense of how she might perform in this concert. I mean, you know, as you might expect, very big, very glamorous, very dramatic performances were seen there. So I guess it's no surprise there's so much hype for this tour. But Beyonce, as you mentioned, hadn't performed solo since 2016. So what do you make of the Taylor Swift comparison that she may out earn all the Swifties? What is it? The Beehive may out earn the Swifties? What do you make of that? I think, you know, both Taylor Swift and Beyonce are incredible performers and artists overall. And I think something that Taylor has done really well in the last three years is that she consistently communicates with the Swifties. She's dropped three brand new albums with Folklore, Evermore and Midnights.

She's dropped two of the six re-recorded albums that she said that she's working on. And, you know, she had the Ares tour merch collection on her website. So she's always giving them something to work with. Whereas Beyonce, I feel like she really takes her time and she knows the Beehive is on her time. So we're not getting, you know, any sense of when acts two and three of Renaissance are coming out. And there's no merchandise connected to the tour on her website currently. So it makes the Renaissance world tour one of those rare moments that the fans can actually see her and hear her.

Heron, I think you're making a great point, which is that these are two really talented women. They're often compared and not always in favorable turns, but they're doing it their own way. In the case of Beyonce, because this is a launch of her tour, what hits are you hoping that she's going to be performing? I absolutely need to hear Crazy in Love. Oh, in school. Yes, very much so. That song is actually turning 20 years old this week. It was released on May 14th, 2003.

And so it's honestly, you know, such a momentous record from her discography actually billboard ranked the song number one on our top 100 songs of 2003 list that we published recently. And it was just such a great debut between her and Jay. I mean, they had done 03 by the side prior, but this was really that moment for both artists where it's like, okay, something's going on here and it's not just musical. And obviously it's one of the greatest love stories in music that's still being told to this day. So definitely Crazy in Love. And I would also say Brown Skin Girl. I mean, if she brings out Jay to do Crazy in Love, I need you to bring out Blue Ivy to do Brown Skin Girl.

It earned their daughter her first Grammy Award. And you know, her parents are, you know, they have so many Grammys between the two of them. And so the fact that she gets to be, you know, part of this moment, and the fact that it's a celebration of, you know, Dark Skin Women and the African Diaspora, and it was part of The Lion King, the gift soundtrack that Beyonce curated, it was really a special moment. And it would be nice for her to relive that for the Renaissance tour. Yeah. What are you hoping, Errol? What are you hoping? I'm just, I think she's an incredible performer. It's like, even if you're not a fan of the music specifically, you could sit and watch what is an elaborate dramatic display.

And even in Dubai, I think she had a broken foot and she still broke it down. So I'm just impressed to see her continue to rock the world. She does that. Aron Mamoa, thank you. Thanks, Aron. Thank you so much.
