Pres. Biden says he will overturn DC's revised criminal code

President Joe Biden says that he's planning to overturn DC's revised Criminal Code Act. Local leaders and elected officials are not happy with the president's decision. The president tweeted, I support DC statehood and home rule, but I don't support some of the changes DC council put forward over the mayor's objections, such as lowering penalties for car jackings. If the Senate votes to overturn what DC council did, I'll sign it. Here's what White House Press Secretary, Karin Jean-Pierre, had to say yesterday. But this is different. The way that we see this is very different.

This is the DC council put changes forward over the mayor's objections, and the president doesn't support changes like lowering penalties for car jacking. All right, our verified team took a close look at that revised Criminal Code Act and found, yes, the bill does reduce the maximum penalty for certain individual crimes, but the bill empowers prosecutors to stack charges for increased jail time. So instead of charging a suspect with simply car jacking, they could be charged with car jacking, weapons charges, and potentially kidnapping if there was a child inside of that vehicle. The Senate will likely take this bill up on Wednesday. Once it passes as expected, it will head to President Joe Biden's desk.
