Grand jury reconvenes in criminal investigation of former President Trump
The grand jury considering evidence against former president Donald Trump reconvened today, a day after Trump held the first major rally of his 2024 campaign. CBS2's Elijah Westbrook is live at Criminal Court in Lower Manhattan with more. Elijah? Well, Chris, so far at this hour, no indication that the former president is here in Lower Manhattan following his announcement that he'll be indicted. Of course, that was made at the beginning of last week, but I can tell you this. So we've learned this morning that prosecutors are in the process of inputting some financial documents pertaining to this case. So we've learned this from sources just hours ago. So in the meantime, we just play the waiting game.
We're still anticipating a response from a Manhattan grand jury, while a special counsel builds a case for possible federal charges. Over the weekend at a campaign rally in Waco, Texas. Prosecutorial misconduct is their new tool, and they are willing to use it at levels never seen before in our country. Trump steered clear of directly referencing Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, despite labeling the DA an animal and calling for potential death and destruction if he's charged. I'm not his social media consultant. I don't. I think that was an ill-advised post that one of his social media people put up.
Trump's attorney maintains his client's innocence in the probe into alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. And he said Trump's inaccurate prediction that he would be arrested last Tuesday was not made up. We've been in touch with with the district attorney's office regarding potential logistics of an arraignment if it gets that point. The investigation comes amid concern for potential violence here in the city, after Trump called for protests if indicted by the Manhattan grand jury. The mayor has insisted that the city is ready to handle any potential unrest. The NYPD does an amazing job of just really dealing with any type of incident that takes place in the city. And you know, there's a lot of speculation.
I think DA Bragg is going to make the final determination. We have not heard, yay or nay. We're just going to be ready no matter what happens. And well, that's exactly what we're doing here in Lower Manhattan, just playing that waiting game. We should have mentioned again, no sign of the former president here in Lower Manhattan, or any indication that the grand jury has made a decision in this case. Of course, we'll continue to stay down here and keep you posted with any developments that may arise. In the meantime, reporting here in Lower Manhattan, Elijah Westbrook, CBS two news.
Elijah, thank you.
