Cleanup begins after deadly tornado outbreaks in South l GMA

Now to the very latest on the tornado aftermath in the South. Whit Johnson is on the scene in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. For us, he's been there since the start. And FEMA officials are there on the ground now as the community is banding together. Good morning, Whit. Rebecca, good morning to you. Block after block in this neighborhood, we see the haunting ruins of family homes.

I'm actually standing inside a living room. Somehow the big screen TV still mounted on the wall behind me. Not much else left standing, as you can see, the roof torn off. The man who lived here says he survived by taking cover inside his shower, holding pillows over his head. And now, like so many others here, he's overwhelmed and unsure about what to do next. This morning, families are combing through what's left of their homes after those devastating tornadoes. The brunt of the storm striking throughout Mississippi, at least 14 tornadoes touching down in this area over the weekend.

Donations don't rebuild all this. The town of Rolling Fork, taking a direct hit from a deadly EF4 twister, much of the community left in ruins. This is the inside of a massive water tower that snapped in half and then spilled all over the ground here. And you can get a sense of the damage from above and the monumental tasks required to rebuild this town. As the cleanup gets underway, we're learning more about the victims. The death toll now adjusted to at least 21 lives lost in Mississippi. Neighbors of husband and wife Lonnie Pierce and Melissa Brown mourning the loss of their dear friends next door.

He was a good man. And his wife was good. She was always at my house. I had a heart attack about a year and a half ago. And she was right there. And she's just that kind of person. Ethan Herndon's family remembering him as a gentle giant.

His baby daughter Riley also killed in the storm, just short of her second birthday. The family saying they are physically and emotionally shattered. Others are now left to pick up the pieces. How fast did it all happen? It happened in three seconds. The house was gone. I knew it was gone because the debris was hitting me. Garrett Miles survived by hunkering down in his shower, holding pillows, now trying to salvage what's left of his belongings and find the strength to move forward.

I just learned to live one day by day. I'm going to just take this one day and go with it. Garrett tells me he knows just how fortunate he is to be alive. Both of his neighbors living right next door were killed. FEMA officials are on the ground here. They're promising assistance every step of the way. But they acknowledge it will take years to rebuild this community.
