War in Ukraine: US says Russia has committed crimes against humanity
The U.S. formally declares that Russia has committed crimes against humanity in its war on Ukraine. Vice President Kamala Harris outlined the evidence during a security conference in Munich, Germany. Her speech cited evidence of indiscriminate attacks that deliberately targeted civilians. That includes the bombing of a maternity hospital that killed a pregnant mother. And an attack on a theater where hundreds of civilians were killed.
We have examined the evidence. We know the legal standards. And there is no doubt. These are crimes against humanity. The vice president says the international community has both a moral and strategic interest in pursuing those crimes, saying there is danger of other authoritarian governments taking advantage if international rules are undermined. February 24th will mark one year since Russia launched that war in Ukraine.
